US carmaker cutbacks hit parts sector

A spate of bankruptcies, plant closures and lay-offs has hit the North American automotive parts industry, underlining the ripple effect of recently announced cutbacks by their carmaker customers.

The carmakers are also showing less inclination than previously to prop up faltering suppliers, apparently taking the view that consolidation in the industry will help them bring down component costs through economies of scale.
