GM reaches healthcare deal with union

General Motors and the United Auto Workers union have reached a deal that, among other concessions, paves the way for the embattled carmaker to contribute shares rather than cash to a new union-managed healthcare plan.

The agreement, which must still be ratified by GM workers, is a critical part of the restructuring plan that the carmaker is racing to complete by a government-set June 1 deadline.
