The German and French governments on Friday edged closer to agreeing on the future of Airbus despite complaints by Jacques Chirac that planned job cuts would “penalise” France more than Germany.
The French president and the German chancellor Angela Merkel, meeting at Meseberg castle near Berlin, said the “burdens and opportunities” arising from the politically sensitive restructuring of the European aircraft maker should be “equal and balanced” between the two countries.
