Many of the developments created under the 1946 New Town Act are now old – or at the very least, middle-aged. Like humans, some are wearing better than others.

“Britain was a pioneer in building garden cities,” says Gideon Amos, director of the Town and Country Planning Association. “We need to relearn those lessons. If we are simply concerned with aesthetic appearance, we are going to fail.”
