The reckless monarch

It struck many as bizarre that King Gyanendra, Nepal's monarch, chose to speak in chaste medieval Nepali on Tuesday when he broadcast his decision to suspend democracy for three years and declare a state of emergency.

The move, which the 58-year-old king said was necessary to protect Nepal's democracy from the twin evils of corrupt political parties and a growing Maoist insurgency, took few people by surprise.
