When, in 2002, Peter Weigl began to sell his first vintage from his new winery in north-eastern Slovenia, he decided to throw a party. Friends and their friends were welcome at his simple, rustic farmhouse, but in return had to purchase a selection of 120 bottles at wholesale prices.
The ploy certainly worked for Ernst Czerny, an Egyptologist at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and, ever since, the 500km round trip from Vienna has become something of an annual pilgrimage.
