Oil prices extend recent falls

Commodity markets suffered an extended hangover in the first week of the new year as copper and oil prices tumbled, raising concerns about the outlook for 2007.

The price of US crude has retreated by more than 9 per cent since the start of 2007, under pressure from mild weather in America, which has reduced the demand for heating oil.
