J Sainsbury lagged the wider market on Wednesday after its finance director poured cold water on talk of a merger with Marks and Spencer.

Since M&S warned on profits last week, several brokers have flagged the attraction of a tie-up with Sainsbury, including Lehman Brothers, which says a deal would fundamentally alter the retail landscape in the UK.
