Irish hopes for concession meet resistance

Ireland’s desire to retain a European Commission seat as a condition for ratifying the European Union’s Lisbon treaty met resistance on Monday from countries fearful that the plan could make the bloc less efficient.

Frans Timmermans, the Dutch minister for EU affairs, said that if Ireland failed to approve the treaty next year, some EU countries would be tempted to forge ahead in new and closer forms of integration, excluding other states.
