The man who always wears white is dressed in blue tonight. “It was just a feeling that came over me,” he tells friends at the bar of the Quintal da Música, a relaxed music venue in Praia, the Cape Verdean capital, where going with the flow is the order of the day.
On a small stage in the covered courtyard, a group of women are pounding intricate rhythms on bundles of cloth held between their knees. A young woman in the audience leaves her table and dances with them, hips gyrating, as the singing and drumming reach a driving climax.
