George Ryan, the former governor of Illinois, was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison on Wednesday following his April conviction on fraud and racketeering charges, a verdict expected to trigger copy-cat probes against elected officials elsewhere in the US.

Mr Ryan rose to international prominence and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize after switching tack on the death penalty and commuting the sentences on more than 150 prisoners on the state’s death row.
