Tiger Wood’s victory in the play-off against fellow American Rocco Mediate in last month’s US Open championship was a tribute to his high level of fitness as much as his natural talent for the sport.

Woods’s win was remarkable considering he had undergone knee surgery just two months previously. The operation to remove fluid from around the ligament of his left knee was his third bout of surgery on the troublesome joint.
