Japan stunned by DPJ chief’s resignation

Japan faced the prospect of further political turmoil and policy gridlock after the leader of the country’s largest opposition party resigned on Sunday just days after rejecting a proposal from the prime minister to form a coalition.

Ichiro Ozawa, leader of the Democratic Party of Japan, said on Sunday: “I have decided to resign to take responsibility to people inside and outside the party, for the political confusion caused by the prime minister’s proposal to form a new coalition.”
