Co-operative group: Plenty of changes in store

When the Co-operative Insurance Services’ headquarters building was erected in 1962 it was the UK’s tallest office block outside London, a symbol of Manchester’s claim to rival the capital as a centre of commerce.

The recent property boom has left the 387ft CIS Tower dwarfed by skyscrapers throughout the UK’s provincial cities, just as the country’s largest mutual business itself became overshadowed.
