Security adviser warns over detention period

Holding terror suspects for an extended period without charge risks bolstering the recruitment of radical Islamists, a government adviser on new security measures warned on Thursday.

In an interview with the FT, Patrick Mercer, Conservative MP and former soldier, said such a policy would prove as counterproductive in intelligence and policing terms as internment had been in the 1970s in Northern Ireland.
