Bush to back deal on defence sales to UK

The US and UK are crafting a treaty to tackle one of the most contentious issues in relations between the two countries by allowing Britain to buy defence products from American companies without having to obtain export licences.

According to people familiar with the negotiations, the treaty would represent a big victory for Tony Blair, the outgoing prime minister, who has repeatedly lobbied George W. Bush over what has been a longstanding disagreement between the two.
