Concern over mortgage master trusts

The structure of the UK market for mortgage-backed securities could be holding back its recovery, according to leading investors who are calling for radical changes.

Unlike other countries, which issue bonds backed by ring-fenced bundles of mortgages, most UK lenders have instead created big pools of loans, known as master trusts, from which they periodically issue bonds and top up with new mortgages.
