Ministers stepped up their rhetoric against “nasty, rightwing” Boris Johnson on Friday in a sign that Labour is increasingly concerned it could suffer a damaging defeat at the hands of the Conservative MP in the contest to be London’s mayor.
The first day of Labour’s spring conference in Birmingham was dominated by personal attacks on the Tory candidate, who was portrayed as a divisive figure in the multicultural capital – which will choose its new mayor on May 1.
