Observer: Language barrier

The onward march of English as Europe's unofficial working language continues apace, as the disgruntled German socialist Martin Schulz discovered this week in Moscow.

Schulz, leader of the European parliament's socialist group, berated the large corps of EU officials working in Moscow for speaking only English, pointing out that 22 per cent of the Union's population spoke German.
