Capital's passengers face big fare rises from January

Boris Johnson, London's mayor, will today announce significant, above-inflation rises in most bus, Underground and some national rail fares, blaming decisions taken by his predecessor.

The price increases will take effect from January and follow Ken Livingstone's decision earlier this year, when mayor, to freeze most public transport fares and cut some bus fares. Labour's Mr Livingstone lost the mayoral election on May 1 to Conservative Mr Johnson.
