UK tax fears as groups switch to Ireland

Two British companies yesterday announced they were shifting their headquarters to Ireland in a dramatic sign of the rising pressures on the UK Treasury to keep its tax system competitive.

Charter, an engineering company that traces its origins back to a company chaired by Cecil Rhodes and founded under the patronage of Queen Victoria, said it was switching its tax base to Ireland to cut its tax rate and compliance costs.
