Gates plays pivotal role in Afghan debate

One man is emerging as the potential swing voter in the Obama administration’s intensifying debate on the future strategy in Afghanistan: Robert Gates, the defence secretary.

Mr Gates spent part of Monday cloistered with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office as the commander-in-chief tries to chart a path forward in Afghanistan amid splits within the administration.
