Italy’s president tells politicans to cool it

Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Italy’s non-partisan head of state, intervened in the increasingly acrimonious national election campaign on Thursday and warned the two warring coalitions to cool their tempers.

“Discord, taken to extremes, is damaging for everybody,” Mr Ciampi told an audience in the northern city of Pavia. “It is on facts and on things to do that the contest should take place.”
