US newspaper crisis deepens

Two of America’s top newspapers are slashing costs more deeply as news organisations across the nation fight for survival from the economic recession’s impact on advertising spending.

The New York Times has cut 100 employees from its business operations and will reduce the salary of non-union employees by 5 per cent for the rest of the year, the company told its staff on Thursday.
