Basque terrorists burst on to the Spanish election campaign stage yesterday by killing a former Socialist town councillor in the Basque country, only two days before Spaniards were due to vote in a closely fought general election.

The ruling Socialist and opposition Popular parties immediately cancelled their final rallies yesterday evening.
