The concept of innovation in the investment banking industry has acquired something of a dirty name in the past 18 months, with the ever-inventive minds of the industry widely blamed for the alphabet soup of complex debt products that has brought the world economy to its knees.

But this opprobrium has not deterred Barclays Capital, whose fund solutions arm aims to benefit from convergence between asset management and investment banking.
