Recession spurs rise in dismissal claims

Claims for unfair dismissal have risen nearly 30 per cent and complaints about failure to consult on redundancies have more than doubled as the pain of recession works through the employment tribunal system.

Lawyers warned that employers must tread carefully in the way they treat staff if they do not want to be hit by expensive legal action as unemployment, currently almost 2.5m, or 7.9 per cent of the workforce, heads towards 3m.
