Shares in Parmalat tumbled by a fifth yesterday after a US court ordered the Italian dairy company to pay Citigroup $364m, in the first of several lawsuits the company is facing after it collapsed in 2003.

The stock was down by 19.9 per cent at the close of trading in Milan, as investors rushed for the exits after the court in New Jersey awarded the damages to Citigroup.
