With a striking blonde mane and standing 6ft 3in tall, Ursula Plassnik can justly claim to overshadow most of her colleagues among the European Union’s predominantly male corps of foreign ministers.

The fact that the official face of Austria abroad is also a career diplomat well versed in the intricacies of foreign policy makes the 49-year-old Ms Plassnik an even more formidable counterpart.
