UK inflation soars to highest rate in 16 years

Surging tariffs for gas and electricity sent inflation in September to 5.2 per cent year on year – its highest level since March 1992 and up from 4.7 per cent the previous month.

The consumer prices index had been widely forecast to hit 5 per cent in September, but the rise in utility bills had a greater impact than economists had expected and was buttressed by some surprise price increases.
