Lula ally quits as claims on graft mount

A deepening political crisis threatens to undermine the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after the head of his Workers' party (PT) resigned at the weekend amid mounting corruption allegations.

José Genoino, one of the party's founders, resigned on Saturday, more than a month after allegations surfaced that the party organised a scheme to pay off legislators in Congress in exchange for votes.
