Athens marked World Environment Day on June 5 with rubbish piled high on pavements after the closure of the capital’s only legal landfill in the suburb of Ano Liosia.

Local authorities shut down the facility for several days to protest against the transfer of partly treated waste from the capital’s waste water sewage treatment plant on the islet of Psyttalia.
