Turkey moves to ease headscarf ban

Turkey’s parliament voted by a large majority on Thursday to ease a decades-old constitutional ban on the wearing of the Muslim headscarf at public universities.

A controversial government proposal has wide public support but is fiercely opposed by Turkey’s republican establishment, which argues that easing the ban will weaken the constitutional commitment to secularism in overwhelmingly Muslim Turkey. Parliament is to hold a second and final vote on Saturday.
