Recessionary mood encloses Royal Ascot

The recession is making the going tough for Royal Ascot, with corporate hospitality takings down by 17.5 per cent and many City traders opting to make their annual pilgrimage on Saturday in order to avoid having to take a day off work.

Companies from the battered finance and construction industries – mainstays of the corporate box crowd – have chosen to stay away from one of the highlights of the social calendar, accounting for much of the shortfall.
