Is equity income the answer? It depends on the question, naturally, but according to Edward Bonham Carter, head of UK fund group Jupiter Asset Management, the compounding power of dividend income will be one of the enduring themes to come out of the credit crunch and market turmoil.

He points out that, over the longer term, "the majority of investors' total returns from equities come from dividend growth and the reinvestment of those dividends".
