Asian focus gives StanChart unit record first half

Standard Chartered, the emerging markets bank, said that its wholesale bank had enjoyed a record first half - but stressed that, though it was seeing green shoots, it was too early to forecast a sustained recovery.

The bank, which has weathered the downturn better than rivals because of its exposure to Asian economies, said in a trading statement that a "very strong" performance by its wholesale bank had been offset by weakness in its consumer division.
