Upbeat Wal-Mart lifts Wall Street

US equities overcame a wobbly start to close higher on Thursday as improved profit forecasts from Wal-Mart and a series of upgrades for technology shares helped damp fears that first-quarter corporate earnings will take a pummelling.

Wal-Mart said sales in March rose 0.7 per cent helped by grocery and flat-panel television products and it raised earnings estimates for the first quarter.
