Nicolas Sarkozy, France's rising political star, will on Sunday be crowned president of the governing UMP party in a spectacular ceremony putting him in prime position to bid for the French presidency in 2007.

The UMP confirmed on Friday that Mr Sarkozy had won the election for the party presidency "with a very large majority".
