Italy shaken as justice minister resigns

Italy's fragile centre-left government was shaken yesterday by the resignation of its justice minister who was reported to be under investigation for corruption following the arrest of his wife.

Clemente Mastella, a senator, announced his resignation to the lower house of parliament, declaring that he was being persecuted by "extremist fringes of the judicial system".
