The Conservative party was urged to engage with the rest of Europe yesterday as Nicolas Sarkozy, French interior minister and president of the ruling UMP, called for a strong alliance of centre-right parties.

Addressing the conference by video link, Mr Sarkozy, leader of the UMP and would-be president of France, said he wanted the right to unite. Three times he told the party: "We need you."
