Zimbabwe to increase government spending

Tendai Biti, Zimbabwe’s finance minister, on Thursday announced a 39 per cent increase in government spending, including a 20 per cent rise in the public service wage bill, thanks to aid pledges of around $500m.

Presenting what was effectively his second budget since being appointed in February Mr Biti reaffirmed his commitment to a balanced budget with no government borrowing during 2009.
