Architect’s fall reflects rise of the apparatchik

When Ed Gillespie was appointed as a senior aide to George W. Bush in June, many in Washington questioned why he would give up his lucrative lobbying career to join a lame duck administration.

Two months later, the decision no longer looks so strange after the resignation of Karl Rove as White House political adviser catapulted Mr Gillespie into a position of greater influence.
