Centrica defies falling demand as profits soar

Centrica, the owner of British Gas, wants to build its business by selling services such as boiler maintenance to generate growth in the face of stagnant energy demand.

The move comes as Centrica defied falling demand from its residential and business customers to report a 28 per cent rise in post-tax earnings to £537m for the first half thanks to a falling tax rate and soaring profits from its residential business.
