Rising prices and the impact of the smoking ban on beer drinking have claimed an unexpected victim – the World Leek and Onion Show.

The annual leek and vegetable growing show at Ashington, Northumberland – once known as the world’s biggest pit village – has deep roots in north-east England’s industrial heritage.
