Minimum pay revives rift in Berlin coalition

Germany’s ruling grand coalition plunged into a new battle over minimum wages on Tuesday, when the Christian Democrats of Angela Merkel, the chancellor, attacked proposals to establish legally binding basic pay for 600,000 employees of temporary work agencies.

Norbert Röttgen, a leading CDU parliamentarian, said most temporary workers were covered by collective bargaining deals, “which should not be replaced by state regulations”.
