Italy leads $1bn bid to finance vaccines

Four countries, led by Italy, are expected to announce support totalling more than $1bn on Friday for a pioneering finance mechanism to stimulate the development of new drugs and vaccines for the developing world.

Italy, Canada, Britain and Norway are finalising commitments for a pilot Advance Market Commitment (AMC) designed to stimulate pharmaceutical companies to produce a childhood vaccine for pneumococcal disease targeted at poor countries.
