Brussels relief at conflict averted

When diplomats in Brussels are asked what Britain has brought to the European Union – besides Euroscepticism and mad cow disease – they often give a one-word answer: pragmatism.

On Wednesday there was a sense of relief in Brussels that David Cameron’s new European policy, while laden with a typically robust Tory defence of national sovereignty, reflected the fact that he might soon have to do business with Europe.
