Mandelson joins battle over spending cuts

Lord Mandelson on Monday refused to rule out axing Trident or the identity cards programme, as part of a government review of “everything” to do with its spending commitments.

The signal of potentially wide-ranging government cuts comes amid an escalating political battle over public spending. The Tories have said that a Conservative government would axe ID cards, as part of a wider programme of – largely unspecified – cost-cutting.
