Decline in EU state subsidies grinds to a halt

The European Commission's long campaign against government subsidies to the private sector continues to lose pace, as figures due to be released tomorrow show little change in the amount of state aid paid out by European Union member states.

According to the Commission's annual state aid scoreboard, the 15 established EU countries lavished €52.8bn (£36bn) on domestic companies in 2003, down from a €57.4bn in the previous year.
