‘Zero carbon’ homes freed from stamp duty

New homes that do not contribute to global warming will be exempted from stamp duty under the chancellor’s plans to help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Mr Brown said he wanted to ensure that in 10 years’ time, all new homes were “zero carbon” – meaning that they incorporated design features, from insulation to renewable energy generation, that reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that they produce.
